Delhaize jumps into the breach for Belgian pig farmers

The corona crisis and African swine fever have given the Belgian pig sector a major blow. To alleviate the suffering of our pig farmers, Delhaize will grant them a crisis contribution until the end of this year.

Belgian pig sector under pressure

Corona has ensured that the demand for Belgian pork, and therefore also its export, has stagnated a bit, while the swine fever has not done the image of European pork in the Far East any good either. And let the Asian market be an important sales market for Belgian pork. In addition to the sharply reduced international sales opportunities, Belgian pig farmers are now also experiencing competition on their own market. Other European countries that are currently also unable to sell their pork are now also trying to sell it to us.

Crisis contribution as a signal and a call

The fall in demand has led to an oversupply, causing the price of pork to reach an all-time low. In response to the declining income of Belgian pig farmers, Delhaize has therefore granted a crisis contribution of 1.5 euros per animal since the beginning of October. This will not solve the problem completely, but Delhaize wants to support the local pig farmers in this way. At the same time, the retail chain wants to give a signal and make a warm appeal to other retailers to also take action.

Financial push

Delhaize is strongly committed to local embedding. Belgian pork is of very high quality. “It is very much appreciated by our customers and we still want to be able to purchase tasty pork from farmers in Belgium in the future. With this – modest – crisis contribution we hope to give the local pig farmers a financial boost and show the example. After all, it is at this very moment that they need the money," Delhaize said. On January 1, 2022, Delhaize will review whether the market has recovered somewhat and whether or not to maintain the crisis contribution.
