Fevia launches new sustainability roadmap

The Belgian food industry cannot escape the sharp rises in costs. Nevertheless, the sector wants to continue to contribute to a sustainable food system with high-quality food and drinks. Fevia presented a brand new sustainability roadmap for this during its annual meeting.

Food sector for many challenges

The explosion in the costs of raw materials, transport, packaging and energy is by no means the only challenge that the Belgian food industry has to find an answer to today. In the past year, the consequences of Brexit, the ongoing corona pandemic, the shortage of employees and the recalls of food containing toxic ethylene oxide were added to this.

Correct price for food

“The ambition of the food sector remains to contribute to a sustainability system with high-quality food and drinks,” said brand new Fevia chairman Anthony Botelberge during the online annual meeting of Fevia. “That is only possible if consumers are willing to pay the correct price. A price that takes into account the cost increases and the investments that all actors in the food chain have to make.”

Sustainability as a common thread

A consumer survey showed that sustainability is becoming increasingly important when purchasing food. That is why the federation of the Belgian food industry worked out a new sustainability roadmap together with its members. It was presented during the annual meeting of Fevia and will become the guideline for creating a sustainable food system in the coming years.
